Before the Taipei International Computer Show, MediaTek was the first to release the new generation of fast charging technology Pump Express 3.0. Through this technology, the battery of a smart phone is fully depleted to 70%, and it takes about 20 minutes, twice the speed of other technologies on the market. It is worth mentioning that Pump Express 3.0 borrows the basic and economic scale of the USBtype-c interface to achieve a cost-effective fast charging system design.
Zhu Shangzu, the chief operating officer of MediaTek, said that consumers are increasingly dependent on smart phones, but the problem of running out of batteries has always plagued many users. Therefore, fast charging technology is highly valued by chip suppliers and mobile phone manufacturers. There are many competitive standards on the market, and even some mobile phone customers have developed their own set of fast charging technology.
In the face of the fiercely competitive fast charging market, Zhu Shangzu is quite confident in his own technology and product strategy. He said that Pump Express 3.0 is the fastest charging technology on the market and borrows the economic scale created by many USB type-c interface standards, such as cables and connectors that follow the USB type-c specification. This means that handset manufacturers who choose to import Pump Express 3.0 will be able to enjoy the cost advantages of a large user base.
Pump Express 3.0 is the world's first solution to directly charge mobile phone batteries via the USB type-c interface. This technology bypasses the internal charging line of the mobile phone and directly sends the charging current to the battery, thus preventing the mobile phone from heating up due to rapid charging.
However, although Pump Express 3.0 is compatible with Type-C, it is essentially a customized communication protocol developed by MediaTek, and the power supply specifications are different from those of Type-C PD. Type-C PD can supply up to 20V, 5A current to the power receiving device, but Pump Express 3.0 directly charges the battery with a current of 3~6V and slightly higher than 5A.
MediaTek said that keeping the voltage within 6V is an ideal fast charging method for mobile phones, because the low-voltage power conversion efficiency is higher than that of high voltage on mobile platforms, such as the conversion efficiency of Pump Express 3.0. 95%.
Pump Express 3.0 also shows the synergy produced by MediaTek. Pump Express 3.0's charging transformer solution is currently provided by Licensing. Before starting charging, the transformer's control chip will communicate with MediaTek via the Type-C CC pin to confirm that both ends support Pump Express 3.0. After that, the quick charging will start. If one end does not support Pump Express 3.0, or if one party is unrecognizable, the transformer can only charge the phone at standard speed.
MediaTek said that identity verification of fast charging devices is a very important security mechanism. It can be expected that mobile phone manufacturers will not want any device to quickly charge their own products, and may even only allow their own production of charging transformers to quickly charge their own mobile phones, so as to avoid the responsibility of accidents is difficult to clarify. In terms of identity verification, MediaTek reserves the flexibility of choice for customers. You can choose to use Type-C PD standard verification or you can use your own customized verification method.
