Crystal oscillator XRCGB for wireless communication

Foreword

So far in 2014, the world has produced 1.9 billion mobile phones a year, of which smart phones account for 70%. In the future, emerging countries are expected to gradually become intelligent, and the demand for smart phones will grow. As the scale of demand expands, the functionality of smartphones will also increase, and smartphones equipped with NFC, personal authentication and secure information exchange, and electronic money settlement will increase. By 2014, only 50% of smartphones are equipped with NFC, but it is expected to rise to 70% by 2017.
Crystal oscillators are used in such NFC-enabled clock components. Murata has commercialized the most suitable crystal oscillator XRCGB-FM series for NFC applications and has been adopted by many customers. This time, we have promoted the high precision of the frequency of this product, and developed the XRCGB-FP series, which can be used by customers who cannot meet the accuracy of general products.
In addition, it is expected that peripheral devices such as wearable devices equipped with BLE (Bluetooth Low Power) communication function linked to smartphones will be rapidly launched in the future. The new XRCGB-FP series, which is commercialized, is also suitable for BLE, and its specifications can be used for a wide range of applications.
In this article, the details and advantages of the most suitable crystal oscillator XRCGB-FP series in wireless communication such as NFC and BLE will be introduced.

Advantages of the crystal oscillator XRCGB series

In order to meet the market demand for high-precision clock components, Murata has developed a unique technology to achieve miniaturization and high reliability, and has developed a crystal resonator with Tokyo Electric Wave Co., Ltd. The HCR® XRCGB series has been in volume production for the general livelihood market since 2009. The biggest feature of HCR® is that it uses the unique packaging technology developed by Murata CERALOCK® for a long time and is equipped with high-quality crystal elements of Tokyo Radio, which is now available in the new surface-mount crystal oscillator.
The difference is in the construction and packaging method of the package compared to a general crystal resonator. The package structure is that the general crystal resonator is shown in Figure 1-A, and the cavity is ceramic package. In contrast, HCR® is shown in Figure 1-B, which is in CERALOCK®. A combination of alumina substrate and metal cap construction with planar construction experience of many years. The packaging method is that the general crystal resonator is packaged by glass or metal fusion, while the HCR® is packaged in the same resin as CERALOCK®.

Based on this configuration, HCR® has the following advantages

1. Thanks to the same construction and packaging method as CERALOCK®, the production equipment using CERALOCK® simplifies production engineering and achieves high productivity.
2. By using a highly versatile material such as a planar structure of an alumina substrate, a metal cap, or a resin, the material cost is reduced as compared with a general crystal resonator, and the supply stability and the corresponding ability to increase the yield are improved.
3. Improve the retention strength of crystal elements by unique screening technology and improve the reliability of impact. In addition, in recent years, with the improvement of environmental awareness, the smartphone market also requires the use of components that do not contain environmental loads. Murata is also actively involved in the development of products that take environmental considerations into account, and HCR® is RoHS compliant.

With the commercialization of the XRCGB series, Murata's ceramic resonators have been expanded to the storage market such as HDD/SSD with relatively high precision requirements in addition to the comparatively dominant vehicle and people's livelihood applications. The commercialized XRCGB-FP series achieves a frequency accuracy (initial tolerance + temperature characteristic) of +/- 40 ppm that can be used for wireless devices (NFC, BLE, ZigBee equipped devices) due to its high precision.

XRCGB series specifications

The appearance of the XRCGB series is shown in Figure 3. The product specifications are shown in Table 1. It has a frame size of 2.0x1.6mm, which is 60% smaller than the conventional 3225 size (3.2 x 2.5mm) in the current market. The corresponding frequency of the commercial XRCGB-FP series is 24MHz to 32MHz, and the clock components for NFC, BLE, and ZigBee can correspond to the main frequencies that are generally used.
As for HCR®, we have launched several series of product lines in the necessary frequency deviation range. The commercial XRCGB-FP series achieves frequency accuracy (initial tolerance + temperature characteristic) +/- 40ppm, which can be used for smartphones. A clock component for wireless communication (BLE, ZigBee, NFC, etc.) used in wearable devices.

Topics and future research

The wireless communication function is not limited to smartphones and wearable devices, and the use of AV/OA applications and home appliances is also expanding. In the interface used in these devices, we are expanding the accuracy of the frequency deviation and the range of the corresponding frequency, and are also promoting the expansion of the lineup.
