The recently announced Google patent application describes a device that integrates mobile device packaging and virtual reality heads-up. The concept is to provide a "relatively low cost" VR head-up solution by inserting a smartphone into the package of a compatible VR viewer.
In 2014, Google introduced to the world a low-cost Cardboard solution, a cardboard-type VR viewer that can package smart phones. Since then, Cardboard viewer shipments have exceeded 10 million units, and many similar products have appeared in the market. Google’s new patent describes a new packaging solution that is similar to the Cardboard solution. This is a particularly interesting idea. After all, the "Daydream-Ready" smartphone with better VR performance can also support VR applications developed for Google Cardboard.
With a powerful smartphone, a Cardboard-style headphone can be used as an entry-level VR option, and users who are particularly interested in VR can upgrade to a better performing VR viewer, such as Google’s Daydream View. This strategy can help Google accomplish their goal: to achieve millions of Android-side VR users in the next few years.
Some companies have already attempted to integrate VR viewers into packages such as Coca-Cola's DIY viewer and McDonald's "Happy Goggle." The larger VR headphone casing (closer to the Gear VR's production process and materials) is sometimes bundled with smartphones. Alcatel's Idol 4S package goes one step further and uses the casing as part of an "out of the box" experience, such as video Show.
This patent was filed on February 24, 2016, involving paperboard or cardboard for the main part of the unit and has repeatedly recommended the use of "glue" and "tape" as adhesive materials. The quality of the enclosure may be closer to the Cardboard viewer than Daydream View, although the patent document also mentions plastic and fabric.
