Japan developed red LEDs that do not use rare elements

According to a report by the Kyodo News Agency on June 22, the research team of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Kyoto University announced on the 21st that it has developed a red light-emitting semiconductor that does not use high-priced rare elements. It is reported that in the future, it is expected to use nitrides made of abundant nitrogen on the earth to be applied to red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells at a low cost. The research team set zinc-containing nitrides as targets for semiconductor candidate substances, listed 583 types of lists, and predicted 21 crystal structures and stability by supercomputers.

On June 21, the research team of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Kyoto University said that it has developed a red light-emitting semiconductor that does not use high-priced rare elements. The picture shows the new nitride emitting red light under illumination.

The researchers selected a material suitable for the red LED to be synthesized at 1200 °C and about 50,000 rpm. The substance emits the expected red light under illumination and is found to be a material for red LEDs.

LEDs using low-cost nitrides have successfully achieved blue and green, but red has never been used practically, and there are problems in that rare elements and difficult-to-dispose raw materials must be used.

Professor Shi Kang, a professor of computational materials science at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said: "The substance needs only a rich amount of elements such as calcium, zinc and nitrogen. In the future, I would like to study a simpler synthesis method to promote practical use."
