ST bus controlled stereo headphone amplifier

(STMicroelectronics) introduces a miniature stereo headphone driver chip with an I2C bus control interface for portable devices such as FM radio-enabled handsets that require superior audio output and minimal peripheral components. The amplifier, code-named TS4975, delivers up to 40mW per channel of continuous average power over a 16-ohm load from a 3.3V supply, and its I2C interface allows 14-step volume control from 18dB to -34dB.

This 1.8 x 2.3mm miniature flip-chip package is ideal for space-critical applications. The TS4975 also implements a false ground output configuration that eliminates the bulky capacitors required for single-ended designs while keeping standby currents extremely low. For 0.6 microamps, the power supply voltage is 2.5V to 5.5V, and the noise reduction circuit eliminates the squeaking and popping sound of the switch.
Nine operating modes, including a variety of I/O switch combinations, plus independent channel shutdown, are controlled via the I2C bus, which is targeted at mobile phones, PDAs, laptops and Walkman devices. Electronic control and manual control are limited, but it is easier to implement through MCU control.
For a 16 ohm load, the output power is 21mW for a 2.5V supply; the output power is 102mW for a 5V supply, THD+N (total harmonic distortion + noise) is 1%, and the operating temperature range is -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. It is available in a 12-flange flip-chip package. Ordering 5,000 pieces, the TS4975 is priced at $1.20. .
