If you recently purchased a brand-new HTC Vive device, you may find that the infrared light layout in the new version of the locator has become a 3×3 grid, with 2 more on the side, and a total of 11 LED lights. The old version of the positioner is a non-uniform layout of the 17 LED infrared lights.
What does a different layout mean? Maybe it's just a different aesthetic. For LED flashes that are used as regular strobes, the arrangement is quite free. Another SteamVR partner of Valve LG demonstrated at the GDC conference with a tightly-circled layout of 8 LEDs, while most of Valve's internal prototypes (including the new single-motor "prism" design) use only one or two straight line.
Is it possible that the latest batch of Vive has been quietly updated to Valve's second-generation locators? The answer is no, you can still clearly see the two lasers in the picture, it looks more like a match HTC Vive's new headset and new cable.
This seems to be only a minor hardware revision, and the quality of tracking does not seem to be different. Xiao Bian guessed that the cost can be reduced through fewer, more powerful LEDs and a simpler PCB layout. The second generation single motor version is still being adjusted.
