Tsisen electric sports car! Tsinghua undergraduate students create a real sports car in 58 days

At the graduation exhibition of undergraduate students at the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University, a sports car with a simple but highly designed look is particularly eye-catching. If you don't understand it carefully, many visitors think that this is an advertisement for a car brand.

To many visitors, this "cool" sports car turned out to be the graduation design work of Zhang Zhan and Ma Junfei, seniors in the transportation design of the Industrial Design Department of Tsinghua University.

Figure 1: The graduation design of Zhang Zhan and Xing Sheng team - Tsisen electric sports car.

The 1:1 ratio creates a real car and can run, which is the first time in the graduation design of Tsinghua's transportation design. Usually, the students' graduation design is a 1:4 clay model, and most of them are concept cars, which cannot be driven.

So, how long does it take to graduate to design a real sports car? The answer is 58 days. The team of five undergraduate students created the electric sports car with light weight, youthfulness, intelligence, modularity and light luxury in less than two months. Perhaps the names of the car brands they created reveal their secrets—taken from Tsinghua’s school motto “The line is better than words”.

In fact, in the Department of Industrial Design of Tsinghua University, graduates want to create a graduation design of 1:1 cars every year, but in the end they all give up because of the difficulty.

In Zhang Zhan's view, the biggest difficulty in this is that design can't just serve modeling.

In general, transportation design students focus on the model design of the artwork and then hand it over to the factory to create a reduced version of the model. In the 1:4 clay model design, students can use their imaginations in terms of car shape and function.

Once you decide to enlarge the model to 1:1 and require the car to actually drive, there will be a lot of mismatch between design and actual production. For example, some models are very cool, but they cannot be realized due to cost, process technology and other reasons.

This means that the designer must make a “compromise” and give up design details that cannot be achieved.

Therefore, when Zhang Zhan proposed the idea of making a "real" car, it was expected to be questioned by all parties.

"I don't want to 'talk on paper', the design can't just obey the styling. After all, it is ultimately to serve people." Zhang Zhan hopes that he can make a vehicle that can really sit in and feel the way, and draw closer to the visitors and works. the distance.

In the end, Zhang Zhan made up his mind. He was alone with a computer to find investors to talk about financing; contacted the "action group" Ma Junfei, the two hit it off, respectively responsible for the exterior and interior of the sports car. Subsequently, Wang Banglong, who has graduated from the China Academy of Art, was also responsible for the design and optimization. Zhang Xufeng, the Tsinghua Automobile Department, was responsible for the frame construction and chassis, and Chen Shuo, who worked at the Automotive Research Institute, was responsible for the improvement of the overall sheet metal and performance. .

In this way, the “Xingsheng” team consisting of 5 undergraduates was successfully formed. “It’s the definition of graduation design in the form of team presentation and entrepreneurship.” In Zhang Zhan’s view, graduation design is not an end, but a new beginning. Its significance lies in the transition from school to society, from individual to team combat mode.

When they really started to do it, they slowly realized that the difficulty of this decision was far beyond imagination.

During the two-month production process, they usually stayed up late until 3 am the next day, and the average daily sleep time was less than 6 hours. Even in order to find a solution to each irresistible factor, they finally lived in the factory. in.

Zhang Zhan said that when they built the car, they did not design the artwork. Instead, after the frame was finished, they went directly to the factory 40 kilometers away from Tsinghua to make foam cuts, breaking through the limitations of the sketches, and in the three-dimensional space of the overall shape. On the car design to scrutinize.

In Ma Junfei's view, this is like the three-dimensional tailoring of European and American fashion designers. In the three-dimensional space to explore the shape of the car, you can explore and solve the problems between design and production in practice.

In manufacturing, the difficulties also followed: in the process of cutting the frame, the entire grinder flew out, and Wang Banglong suffered injuries to the entire left hand; when wrapping the interior, due to the higher temperature, when opening the rubber can The glue sprayed out and sprayed directly into Ma Junfei's eyes; in the process of making the sports car shell, the symmetry problem of the three-dimensional space plagued the winning team for a long time. It is difficult to ensure symmetry on both sides of the car body. After many failures, they built XYZ faces on the real car to be symmetrical, and finally solved this problem.

Zhang Zhan compares this graduation design to a “light development”. Although the Tsisen electric sports car is gorgeous and can really drive, in the strict sense, many production processes do not meet the production regulations of the car. However, this "light research and development" gave this car a new definition and design, and also gave directions for the development of the next car of the Xingsheng team.

Ma Junfei told reporters that the sports car used a conflicting language between the raised ridgeline and the surface and the scattering surface, showing a contrasting but blending beauty. The tire size is increased and the chassis is lowered, giving the sports car a lighter posture.

In order to reflect the lightweight in the design, the team won the choice of a lightweight, high-strength engineering plastic to make the interior. The car body originally planned to use carbon fiber to achieve lightweight, but due to cost and molding process, the final use of FRP.

In addition, they used a completely new control system: the physical button part was subtracted, and some necessary buttons were retained. The operation was replaced by a 12.1-inch screen, which was convenient for the user to experience on the smooth screen that he was used to.

In the few physical buttons left, they also played new tricks: the reserved Bluetooth physical buttons, the activities are detachable, can be placed in any place they are used to, can be adjusted according to each person's preferences. Really meet the needs of young users for smart and trendy sports cars.

At present, this sports car has been connected to the circuit of 12V voltage, and all the parallel connection of the 72V main line circuit has been completely cleared, and can really run.

However, Zhang Zhan admits that Tsisen is not running fast and his voice is not as strong as a traditional sports car. The reason is that China's road conditions cannot reach the speed of more than 250 kilometers of sports cars, and the law does not allow it. Many young people like sports cars because of its cool shape.

Therefore, the Xingsheng team tried to embody the concept of environmental protection through “light luxury” positioning. They choose electric energy as the driving power of the sports car, and attract young people to accept new energy through the design of the shape. They believe that promoting the popularization of new energy vehicles is an unshirkable duty of transportation design students.

"The electric vehicles on the market today are mostly old scooters in the traditional sense. The electric vehicles that meet the needs of young people are a big market gap." Next, the winning team will seize the demand of young people in the future. It provides smart electric sports cars that meet both commuting and their individuality and economy.

"The most fundamental significance of this car is that it is a graduation design. We have done 1 and 10 now, and constructed a rough framework. The next thing we have to do is to give the content between 2 and 9. Filled up." Zhang Zhan said.
