This circuit uses a transformer, which must have a very high peak forward current, typically over 100A. The 7812 chip will only pass 1 amp or less of current, and the rest will flow through the external transistor. Since the circuit design handles loads up to 30 amps, six TIP2955s can be connected in parallel to meet this need. Each power transistor consumes one-sixth of the total load, but must have sufficient heat dissipation capability. The maximum load current produces the most power, so a very large heat sink is required.
