2008 Lighting for Tomorrow LED winners announced

Thirty-two companies submitted LED entries, four of which were recognized in the Near-term Applications category and three in other application categories. The annual annual lighting for Tomorrow competition attracted a large group of new designs in energy-efficient lighting, including 56 solid state lighting (SSL) models incorporating LEDs. Fixtures were judged on color appearance and rendering, amount and distribution of light, innovation, and Application efficiency.
The competition is designed to stimulate the market for attractive, energy-efficient residential lighting fixtures that use a fraction of the electricity of standard incandescent fixtures.
Awards were presented at the American Lighting Association Annual Conference in Washington DC on Sept. 16. Thirty-two companies submitted LED entries, and there were 3 winners in the Near-term Applications category.
Kichlers DesignPro Kichler Lighting was recognized for its under-cabinet light fixture Design Pro Series in the kitchen undercabinet category. These ultra-thin, 3/8 inch profile aluminum discs have a 2 3/4 inch diameter and provide a warm white, energy- Efficient light under and around cabinets. The design received high marks for even light distribution and excellent color quality. Cylindrium LED task light Luximo won in the portable desk/task lighting category with its Cylindrium design. The judges were impressed by the elegant thermal design, superior color quality, high light output, and even light distribution. The high-efficiency luminaire fuflills the promise Of energy efficiency without sacrificing light quality in a beautiful form, the award brochure Crees LR4 downlight Last year's grand prize winner, LED Lighting Fixtures (LLF), now Cree LED Lighting Solutions, was selected as the winner in the recessed downlight category with its LR4 downlight. It was selected for its superior energy efficiency and color quality. In the Near-term Applications (desk/task lighting) section, Digital Lighting Inc. received an honorable mention for its MP-400 task/desk light fixture for color quality and color adjustment features.
Companies awarded honorable mentions in the Other Applications category for LEDs, along with their area of ​​specialty, were:
Cree LED Lighting Solutions for its LR24 (Efficacy)
Osram Sylvania for its HF2Stick XB Sx-Series (Flexibility)
Journée Lighting for its Lotus LED Luminaire (Design).
By encouraging new designs and technologies, Lighting for Tomorrow aims to increase market acceptance and awareness of the growing opportunities in energy-efficient lighting.
Winners will be showcased in the SSL Winners Brochure, highlighting the LED-based winners; a new construction brochure aimed at home builders; and a consumer brochure providing a quick snap shot of the highest scoring products.
Lighting for Tomorrow, launched in 2002, is organized by the American Lighting Association (ALA), the US Dept. of Energy (represented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). More than two dozen energy- Efficiency organizations nationwide joined in supporting this latest competition.
