Analysis: Apple's New MacBook Causes Microsoft's Fear

The listing of a new ultra-portable Mac computer will usually not worry Microsoft. But Apple's latest release of Mac should be able to make the Windows team feel scared.

The product itself cannot yet further damage Microsoft’s absolute dominance in the PC market. However, the product demonstrated the ability of several Macs that have already been implemented and Microsoft seems hard to catch up with.

The most important of these is that the Mac will have the ability to recover immediately, just like the iPhone and iPad. This ability to simply press a key to return to the original picture, Apple called "on the go", but it is actually an immediate recovery. Because the product can stay asleep for several weeks, it is basically the same.

Windows 7 that went public this week is a great improvement in recovery time, but even the most high-end Windows PCs are not as good at this point as the new Mac — at least based on my experience with the new MacBook Air.

Air is faster, partly because it uses flash memory. But the bigger part is that Apple had long planned that the product would not use a traditional hard disk, and designed a faster system accordingly. Jobs mentioned several times at the conference that Air represents the future MacBook, suggesting that all Apple's portable products may be switched to flash memory in the future. In the brief conversation after the meeting, Jobs once again stressed this point.

In contrast, Microsoft, in order to support Windows, must ensure that its operating system can operate on every device that meets its minimum specifications. Simply put, this is the most typical challenge for Windows. Because Microsoft has a large number of hardware partners (having to support older hosts), Windows often sacrifices important performance for compatibility.

This is one of the areas where Microsoft continues to work with hardware manufacturers to improve. There are currently some very light-weight hosts equipped with SSDs (including the ultra-thin Vaio X, and even lighter than the MacBook Air). The chip development should speed up this part of the improvement. Microsoft also has an advantage in terms of price - the price of flash memory is still much higher than traditional hard drives, and any standardization progress in solid-state storage can ensure that Windows notebooks enjoy greater room for price competition.

However, Microsoft is not only worried about the MacBook Air. Apple is planning to introduce a new version of Mac OS X Lion, which will be introduced in the Ming dynasty, to bring more iPad-like consumer electronics experience to the Mac.

Even before that, Mac's exclusive app store will be on the line, revitalizing Apple's computer as a platform for software development. This opportunity is particularly appealing for small, low-cost applications that are successful on iPhones and iPads. It is difficult for you to release and sell a unit price of $2 in the traditional software industry, but it is very simple in the application store. This kind of software distribution mechanism also remedied Air's lack of optical drive.

Microsoft also seems to be planning to launch its own app store on Windows 8, but would not reveal any related news.

Finally, Apple's new version of iLife. One of Microsoft's big wishes at the end of the year is the power of Windows Live applications combined with Windows 7. The company spent a lot of effort to remake its film production and photo editing software in order to meet Apple, and plans to use these two software as the main holiday advertising.

The Windows Live Essentials package does have some features that Apple does not have, including that the software is provided free of charge, and Apple's software is pre-installed on newly purchased computers. In addition, Microsoft has Windows Live Mesh for multiple PCs (even Macs) to synchronize data. So, let's look at how Microsoft responds to Apple's flash advantage.
