Firstsite, the new contemporary visual arts complex in Colchester, England, was designed by award-winning architect Rafael Violy, who designed the artificial lighting for BDP.
The 3,200m2 art center has flexible performance areas and exhibition areas, cafes and restaurants, auditoriums, and conference rooms. The building is crescent-shaped with a unique golden yellow copper and aluminum alloy on the outside. The design is eye-catching and looks like it attracts people's attention. The “stunning element†continues into the interior, and the double-height entrance hall is full of sunshine. Located on the site of the Scheduled monument, firstsite is surrounded by an 18th-century park that blends perfectly with the axis's axial and surrounding history.
Entering the giant entrance, visitors pass through the indoor corridor to all areas of the art complex, ending in the cafe. The curved building creates a sense of travel indoors, allowing visitors to watch the art while walking.
In this gallery, because natural light plays an important role, it is possible to design this project as a “Sunshine Gallery†and provide auxiliary lighting on demand.
Lighting design concept:
Use the cold pole line to outline the axial geometry of the building. Wraparound lighting, softly flowing on the walls and ceilings, adds a sense of travel.
The term “gallery†provokes our original concept of how all unknown forms of work will be exhibited here in the future. The flexible performance of the building offers the possibility to present contemporary art in the future. Whether it's day or night, design a wonderful space for a wide variety of activities and functions.

As a lighting design consultant, Violy is known for his excellent control of natural light in the buildings they design. They can help architects analyze and sculpt buildings, respond to the building's need for natural light, and have enough north-facing light to shine on the exhibits. Designers use the sun only where they are needed, and the rest are occluded, such as cafes. . Install windows to maximize visibility and combine visitors with the surrounding landscape. No extra protection or shading is necessary.
