Maxim Introduces Compact Synchronous Buck Converter for Industry's Lowest EMI

[Maxim Introduces Compact Synchronous Buck Converter to Provide Industry's Lowest EMI] On May 24, Maxim announced the availability of pin-compatible MAX20073 and MAX20074buck converters to help automotive electronics designers significantly reduce EMI while improving efficiency. The compact converter provides the industry's lowest EMI, suitable for low-voltage point-of-load power supply designs, and is ideal for automotive infotainment systems and ADAS applications.

Automotive electronics designers are adding more and more features to modern high-end cars, requiring the use of solutions that are efficient, compact, and meet or exceed EMI specifications. As more and more car functions, the number of power rails also increases. Each power supply is powered by a front-end buck converter powered by a car battery, which often has stringent regulation accuracy requirements. In addition to all the above challenges, designers need to meet the strictest industry safety standards.

Compared with competing solutions, the MAX20073/MAX20074 are more efficient and provide the industry's lowest EMI, which can effectively reduce the interference that affects the functionality of the subsystem. The solution size is very small and the quiescent current is extremely low. Combining Maxim's unique architecture advantages such as spread-spectrum oscillator, syncin function, forced PWM, pulse skipping mode, and current mode, system quality and performance are greatly improved, simplifying the overall design. In addition to the additional advanced features, back-end point-of-load (POL) bucks such as the MAX20073/MAX20074 meet the stringent voltage requirements of many power rails. The device output voltage is very accurate, ideal for applications such as processors and memory that require very stringent voltage accuracy. The IC also meets stringent safety standards and can operate at low voltage inputs over a wide temperature range, minimizing radio frequency interference (RFI) and providing high accuracy, high efficiency, and high reliability.

The main advantage

Minimum EMI: Unique spread spectrum and SYNNIC features effectively suppress system EMI, allowing designers to easily meet EMI specifications

High Efficiency: Maximize industry efficiency across the entire work area compared to competing solutions

Small size: Small, 3mmx3mm, 10-pin TDFN-EP package reduces overall system footprint and saves system BOM cost

Output voltage accuracy: The factory can preset the output voltage, output voltage accuracy up to ± 1.5%, without the need for expensive 0.1% external resistor

Evaluation

"The designers need buck converters to meet today's increasingly stringent requirements, such as small size, ultra-high voltage accuracy, and greater efficiency," said Warren Tsai, business management director at Maxim Integrated Automotive. "The MAX20073 and MAX20074 are upgraded versions of the low voltage." The newest member of the family of small-sized POLbuck converters meets most system power requirements and passed pre-EMI testing."
