Millet box mini version disassemble illustration: hardware configuration evaluation

Earlier this year, Xiaomi Technology released the latest mini box OTT set-top box (hereinafter referred to as the small box). From the overall configuration point of view, this box uses MTK's MT8685 quad-core chip, the box features a maximum reduction, only one HDMI interface can be an external television. What exactly is the internal hardware configuration? The following small series will be introduced in detail for everyone.
Hardware disassembly:

The Xiaomi box has two accessories, one is a Bluetooth remote control and the other is a 1.5 meter long HDMI cable.



No screws are used on the outside of the box, and the outer shell is molded by ultrasonic welding, so it is difficult to dismantle. After the dismantling is completed, the shell is also damaged and it is difficult to recover.









The external part of the power supply is protected by a black flame-retardant plastic. After removal, the power board is exposed. Through the data and actual measurement of the switching power supply transformer, the power supply outputs 5.1V DC. The high and low voltage parts of the power supply are not isolated by the common physical grooving method, but by increasing the isolation distance of the components to comply with the relevant electrical specifications.







The motherboard achieves the purpose of heat dissipation by combining heat conduction with aluminum heat sinks of the housing. There is WIFI and Bluetooth integrated dual-band antenna on the side of the shell.

The motherboard signal processing section has a shield cover. After opening the shield on the back of the motherboard, the main processing chip MT8685 is revealed, and South Asia DDR3 memory is exposed. The DDR3 memory is 512MB, and the two components make up 1GB.

Next to the signal processing unit is an antenna contact for connection to the antenna of the housing. Because Bluetooth and 2.4G WiFi signals are in the same frequency band, they can share the same antenna. Remove the shield of the signal unit and expose MTK's MT6225N multifunction chip. This chip integrates Bluetooth, WiFi and other functions.





After removing the shield on the front of the mainboard, the exposed chip is a 4GB eMMC flash memory from SKhynix. This flash memory stores system programs and application software, taking up about 2.2GB of space. The memory available to the user is about 1.8GB. The remaining portion of memory can be used to install third-party applications and caches.







Millet's Bluetooth remote control uses a button battery, because it uses low-power Bluetooth 4.0 technology, a battery can take about 1 year. The biggest advantage of the Bluetooth remote control is that it can implement an angleless remote control like WiFi. In this application scenario, the device can be placed in a hidden corner without having to worry about remote control issues. The drawbacks of Bluetooth remote control are also obvious. Take the millet box as an example. After the box is closed by the remote controller, the box only closes the video output. In response to the Bluetooth remote control signal, the background related module is still working, and the power consumption of the box is still more than 2W.




Software section:



Xiaomi's box is based on the Android 4.4.2 version of the MIUI TV system. After the system is turned on, the bluetooth remote controller can be easily connected through the shield prompt. This Bluetooth pairing process does not need to input any information. Just press the OK key several times as prompted to reduce the user's usage threshold.



This box is equipped with the Central Guanghe Internet TV's Integrated Broadcasting and Control Platform (GITV). The interface is basically similar to the previous millet box. It is said that after using the Galaxy Internet TV platform, the online video content of the Xiaomi Box has increased to 140,000 hours. The mainstream movie and TV programs can be watched online.





The millet box also has Xiaomi's app store built in. However, the number of APPs in the store is small and it is difficult to meet the needs of users. Because no USB interface is provided, conventional methods cannot install third-party applications.




The system's built-in “HD player” program can search and play video content shared by storage devices such as NAS in the home. After pretending to be a geek trial, Xiaomi's small box can smoothly play common Blu-ray original image, MKV and other video formats on the network.





This high-definition player still uses the shooter's video and audio technology. It relies on the original shooting network's subtitle resources. For video resources without subtitles, subtitles can be automatically matched and downloaded, making it easy for students with poor English to use it.




In the HD video downloaded from the hard disk of the router, the power consumption of the Xiaomi box is stable at around 3W. When performing other operations, the power consumption of the box floats between 3-5W. From the test data, this box is still relatively power-efficient.


How to install a third-party application?



As a rule, current OTT set-top boxes cannot be installed with third-party applications. However, the Xiaomi box is still very obscure in the corner of the system to provide users with the ability to install third-party APP.

If you want to install an application that allows you to install an unknown source in the settings, you can install the application to the Xiaomi Box through the mobile phone or PC in the "Quick Install" option.









The most common feature in box products is watching videos. Pretend to be an Android version of the video client where Geek installed several first-line video sites and found that these applications can be used normally. However, these applications are no longer optimized for the remote control of OTT set-top boxes. It seems that the video site is still strictly complying with the relevant regulations of the SARFT.
