US Department of Energy invests in 17 SSL projects Cree, Veeco selected

On January 20th, the US Department of Energy (DOE) released a press release on the 15th, announcing that the US Recovery and Reinvestment Act will invest $37.8 million in 17 solid state lighting (SSL) projects. Technology, product development and manufacturing projects.

 

    According to the press release, core technology-related programs received $4 million in funding, with Cambrios, Rochester University and WiteOptics LLC. The product development project received $10.3 million in funding and was selected by Cree, General Electric (GE), Lightscape Materials, Osram Sylvania, Philips Lumileds and PPG industries. The manufacturing project received $23.5 million in funding and was selected by Applied Materials, GE Global Research, GE Lumination, KLA-Tencor, Philips Lumileds, Ultratech, Universal Display and Veeco Instruments.

    Each selected project will focus on a pre-defined research area. For example, GE will study phosphors for warm white LED light engines.
