Sony Electronics USA began to enter the correct route. In the past year, the company was forced to re-edit the product line, and now they have to catch up and put the treasure on flat-panel TVs and HD media.
A few days ago, Stan Glasgow, president of Sony USA, accepted an interview with CNET.
Q: You have already launched an 11-inch OLED TV, and said that it will invest another 200 million US dollars for the next phase of investment, so how big is the size of the future OLED?
Glasgow: Within a few years, we set the OLED TV size target at 27 inches. This is a short-term goal. In the long run, we hope to make OLED TVs as large as LCD TVs. Like 52 inches, 46 inches and 36 inches, this is only a matter of time.
Q: How is the consumer's affordability? How long does it take for OLEDs to enter the mainstream market?
Glasgow: It will take many years until the cost point of OLED is close to LCD TV. In the near future, you will buy the same size OLED TV at a price more than LCD TV.
We can continue to reduce the thickness of the OLED TV by 3 mm, and it can be made thinner and not too long.
Q: What is the application of OLED on other devices? We already know that Samsung has said that it will use OLED screens on mobile phones next year.
Glasgow: We mainly put it on TV. Our current interest is on TV. I am not saying that this interest will not change in the future, but at present, TV is the best application for OLED. The bigger things you make, the more complex they are, the simpler the easier. So it is easy to use OLEDs on devices such as mobile phones, but that is not the area we are interested in. Our point of interest is on TV. Our engineering strength and investment are concentrated in this area.
Q: Last week, there were reports that you launched the Internet connection function for the movie "Superman" on Bravia TV. Is this a one-off thing or more and more?
Glasgow: I can only say that this is an experiment. We will try and experiment with the TV Internet function.
Q: Are there other innovative ideas besides the interactive menu of Blu-ray movies?
Glasgow: We look at Blu-ray as a social network, content is not only provided by Sony and its partners, but users can also submit content.
Blu-ray will be very interactive. First, you can interact with the show while watching TV. Second, you can interact with others.
Q: What is the future penetration rate of the Blu-ray format compared to the current DVD?
Glasgow: This is a good question. It took the DVD a decade to become popular. We are now in the second year of the development of the Blu-ray format. I think the Blu-ray format will soon be popular. The price of Blu-ray format is falling faster than DVD. I think it will be popular in less than 10 years.
Q: How important is the PS3 game console in the entire Sony US strategy?
Glasgow: We are now united in various departments, the gaming department, the electronics department, the film and record department, which is a force. The Superman movie is a good example. Our various departments are closely united for this film. We will adopt the same strategy when making other products. Therefore, from this point of view, without the game department, we will not be as strong as it is now.
Q: How do you think about the impact of the popularity of ultra-low-cost notebooks on the notebook business?
Glasgow: This product area is different in the United States and in developing countries. We have done a lot of research on consumer choice. It’s popular to have a second laptop, but we need to try it out.
Q: Do you think we should have more equipment or less equipment?
Glasgow: Obviously, I am not an ordinary consumer. I usually send a lot of emails and I spend a lot of time online. I am not satisfied with devices such as BlackBerry and Sony Ericsson. I find it difficult to read information on these devices. I am older, my eyes are not good, and the fonts on those devices are too small. But I also don't want to carry laptops around. So something between the laptop and the phone will be cool.
My thoughts above are for the United States, and the situation in emerging market countries will be different.
Q: It was reported last month that Quanta Computer is producing a mini laptop for you. Is this true?
Glasgow: I can't disclose the situation.
