CombOLED is the EU's seventh collaborative R&D framework project. The goal is to integrate the structure of new equipment, making full use of advanced manufacturing techniques and materials with low complexity to develop cost-effective OLED-based lighting technology.
The project, led by OSRAMOpto Semiconductor, was launched on January 1, 2008 for a three-year period with a budget of 7 million euros (US$10.9 million). Although it did not disclose how much funding the EU provided, according to previous EU research practices, the EU and commercial companies will each contribute half.
The CombOLED Alliance can be viewed as a complete OLED supply chain covering substrate offering, device manufacturing, and application design, prototyping, and more. The seven main partners are from France, Spain, Italy and Germany.
The general lighting market is expected to exceed 1 billion euros in 2015, and OLED technology is considered to be a strong force in this market. Its outstanding technical features are: continuous illumination for more than 10,000 hours, brightness up to 1,000 cd/m2, The power efficiency is as high as 40-60 lm/W.
The CombOLED project is expected to produce a component architecture that prints large format transparent light sources.
