According to foreign media reports, the BMW Group introduced computer tomography (CT) in the development, production and analysis of prototype vehicles, the first in the automotive industry. Thanks to this technology, even in the early stages of development of the vehicle, BMW can manage the quality of all models from BMW MINI to Rolls Royce. The scanning work is performed by four robots , which move around the outside of the prototype, producing thousands of cross-sectional imagery for detailed inspection of the vehicle's innovative technology, new materials and bonding techniques. At present, vehicles basically need to be disassembled for analysis, but CT can check the vehicle when the vehicle is intact. The new X-ray system is installed at the BMW Group's pilot plant in Munich's Research and Innovation Center (FIZ), at the crossroads of BMW's R&D and production divisions.

Udo Hanle, head of production integration and pilot plant, said: “Using advanced computed tomography is an important step forward for us as it will help us further improve our product quality. We don’t need to disassemble the prototype first. A detailed analysis of them, the new system allows us to inspect the vehicle in ways that traditional static computed tomography cannot. In the end, it will allow us to integrate new technologies into a range of vehicles faster."

Analyze internal structure

Michael Koch, Head of Materials and Process Analysis, added: “We have been scanning and inspecting vehicles with CT and X-rays for many years, but this latest system takes quality assurance to a whole new level. We now analyze vehicles up to the micron level.”

For various reasons, such as testing welds and screw connections and verifying the condition of the body before and after painting (extreme temperatures can affect adhesive bonding), such a level of detail inspection is required. Then, according to the scan results, the mass-produced models can be modified in a targeted manner.

The scanning work is coordinated by 4 robots. Once the vehicle is in place in the scanning system, the robot moves around it. The robots work in pairs, they send X-rays to the vehicle and then pass them on to the partner. The data they collect then computes multi-layer, three-dimensional images through specially developed computer programs that form the basis for detailed analysis of the internal workings of the vehicle, providing object information as small as 100 microns (approximately the width of human hair).

Engineers are currently investigating the extent to which artificial intelligence can be used to assess inspection results. By processing large amounts of data, artificial intelligence software can learn different modes, connect individual data items, and gradually evaluate the results automatically.

Two years of research and development work

The BMW Group engineers and the Fraunhofer X-ray Technology R&D Center (EZRT) spent two years developing the system, the first in the automotive industry. Philipp Janello, Project Manager of BMW Group, explained: “Working with X-ray experts and engineers at the pilot plant, we can improve the test system software by conducting a comprehensive test evaluation on the vehicle body.” Finally, we developed a meeting to meet the requirements of the BMW Group.
