Recently, Microchip Technology Inc. announced the addition of a low-cost PIC24F "KM" family to its 16-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) portfolio. Available in a variety of low pin count packages, the family offers up to 16 KB of Flash, 2 KB of RAM and 512B EEPROM, as well as advanced analog integration for cost-sensitive automotive, consumer, medical and industrial applications.

The PIC24F "KM" family offers a new level of integrated analog functionality such as a 12-bit ADC with threshold detection, an 8-bit DAC with analog control loop and precision comparator reference, and an op amp to aid in sensor amplification. For the first time, the PIC24 "KM" MCU features a new multi-output capture/compare/PWM module (MCCP) and single-output capture/compare/PWM module (SCCP) peripherals, including integrated timers and advanced PWM control to help achieve Motor control, power and lighting applications. The MCCP and SCCP modules combine timer, input capture, output compare, and PWM functions in one time base for optimum flexibility. These modules include 16/32-bit timer support, and because of their asynchronous operation capabilities, high-speed clock operations can be utilized to achieve higher resolution. They also automate in sleep mode to optimize power consumption.

The PIC24F "KM" family is also the first PIC24 family to offer configurable logic cells (CLCs) to add on-chip peripheral interconnects. The CLC module can create custom on-chip real-time logic and is supported by the CLC configuration tool to graphically encode the circuit instead of using assembly language or C language, saving programmers time.

In addition to advanced peripheral integration, the "KM" series includes support for 3V and 5V applications. Many users prefer 3V operation for portable battery-powered applications, while the 3V "KM" products all include ultra-low-power XLPs for optimal battery life. Other users prefer the PIC24FV16KM version of the 5V operation for applications where greater dynamic range, immunity and robustness are key factors. For customers who want to design cost-sensitive applications such as flow meters, smoke detectors, stepper motors and BLDC motors, LED dimming, battery charging, environmental sensors and portable disposable medical supplies, the PIC24F "KM" relies on its Extremely low power consumption and integrated advanced analog modules are undoubtedly an excellent solution.

Joe Thomsen, Director of MCU16 Products at Microchip, said: "Microchip continues to innovate with new and flexible peripherals to help designers simplify board design and reduce system-level costs. The new PWM modules, CLC and highly integrated analog signal chain in the KM series Helps to achieve a variety of applications."

Development support

Users planning to develop with the 3V PIC24F "KM" MCU can purchase the Microstick (part number DM240013-1) for the 3V PIC24F K Series. Users planning to develop with the 5V PIC24FV "KM" MCU can purchase the Microstick (part number DM240013-2) for the 5V PIC24F K Series. Both Microsticks are USB powered and include an integrated debugger/programmer so no external programmer is required. They also include a device under test (DUT) slot for easy device insertion and removal, and a prototype board can be inserted. These Microsticks are supported by Microchip's free MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and are compatible with all 3V and 5V PIC24F K-series microcontrollers in a 28-pin SPDIP package. The Microstick (DM240013-2) for the 5V PIC24F K Series is being promoted at a promotional price.

Availability

The PIC24F "KM" MCU operates from 1.8V to 3.6V, while the PIC24FV "KM" version is available from 2V to 5.5V. The PIC24F(V)16KM204, PIC24F(V)08KM204, and PICF(V)16KM104 are available in 44-pin TQFP and QFN packages and in a 48-pin UQFN package. The PIC24F(V)16KM202, PIC24F(V)08KM202, PIC24F(V)16KM102, and PIC24F(V)08KM102 are available in 28-pin SOIC, SSOP, SPDIP, and QFN packages. The PIC24F(V)08KM101 is available in 20-lead SOIC, SPDIP and SSOP packages. Samples of all of these new microcontrollers are available in volume production and are available in volume quantities from 10,000.
